During the nineteenth century there was a constant debate on if the government should regulate the businesses and people of America. This debate included many different sides other than the capitalists versus the socialists, throughout America people were placed on a spectrum from socialists to capitalists with millions of different variations and beliefs in between the extremists. Some viewpoints included men like William Graham Sumner or Herbert Spencer that believed in laissez-faire capitalism but differed in exact beliefs of how America should be ran from other capitalists such as Andrew Carnegie and then there were viewpoints from men such as Henry Demarest Lloyd who strongly opposed capitalism. Sumne r describes a person that is unable to progress individually as, â€Å"a man who is present as a consumer, yet who does not contribute either by land, labor, or capital to the work of society† and he believed that, â€Å"on no sound political theory ought such a person to share in the political power of the state. (518)† Spencer shared in this view, he stated that individuals that were wealthy and in control of business were more ‘perfect’ than those that were poor and had not tried to progress to their highest potential. He thought that the wealthy should not help the poor and that through this process a social Darwinism would occur weeding out the weak. Although some capitalists agreed with these men’s thoughts, not all did, including Andrew Carnegie. Another argument in favor of a capitalist America was that of Carnegie. He agreed with capitalists like Sumner and Spencer that laissez-faire capitalism was the right choice for American society, but he differed in their opinion about how America should react to the poor. Like Sumner and Spencer, Carnegie thought that the owners of companies should have complete control of their companies and should not be regulated by the government. A Personal Experience with Fear Essay Fear is one of the strongest human emotions and a great motivator. Fear is what motivates us to get an education, to get a job, and to get married. We fear not being able to get a job so we get an education, we fear being alone so we marry, we fear dying alone so we have children who will love us until the day we part from this world. Without fear what would our lives be like and how would we act. I have fear in my life everyday, when I go to work it’s there, when I come home it’s there. I work in the Pikeville Medical Center Surgery Department, and I see and feel fear everyday of my life. When I hear over the load speaker â€Å"trauma alert priority one† my heart hits the floor, because that could be one of my family members. Whenever were working on someone else’s family member that fear is there, so fear is a daily activity in my life. Fear will always be there, and fear is a motivator it will get you through some of the toughest times in your life, even when you don’t think you can go on. Back in 2013, fear hit me like a ton of bricks, and I didn’t know how I would take care of my family. I found out in June 2013, that I was laid off from the mining industry, and my world came crashing down right on top of me. I didn’t know what to do, and mining was all I knew, how else would I provide for my family. I enrolled in school, and decided to make a career change, but not without fear. I hadn’t been to school in years, and I was scared to death. Well, this is my fourth semester of school so far, and fear is still there. However, my journey has just began, and I’m now pursuing my degree in Criminal Justice. I’m so fearful everyday that something is going to happen, and I’m not going to get my degree, or something is going to happen to my job. Fear just consumes your life, and I think the more it consumes you the more you just press on and succeed. Tesco followed a very conservative approach to reduce the risk of failure. The company used what they call the â€Å"in-store picking model† which basically means picking the goods the customer wants from their existing brick and mortar stores. The other option was to build large warehouses and use them exclusively for their online distribution channel; this is the strategy that failed online groceries retailers such as Webvan. com and Peapod. com had used. In this context, Tesco was wise to stay away from the warehouse model, which would have also required an initial multimillion investment that the company was hesitant to undergo on an unproven business. Another important initiative from the company at the early stages of Tesco. com was to open cyber-cafes in stores across the country during the year 2000 to empower customers that were not comfortable with using the internet. This idea was probably crucial in gaining customers that were interested in the convenience of having their groceries delivered to their homes but that might have stayed away from Tesco. com just because of their internet illiteracy. Additionally, Tesco. om focused all the efforts on designing their website to be as user-friendly as possible rather than aiming their efforts towards a highly technical and complicated website, and keeping in mind that convenience is what the customers wanted in the first place. By doing this Tesco was not only offering its customers convenience, but it was also providing them with an incentive to get the Tesco Clubcard which in turn would increase customer loyalty. An additional benefit of having customers use the Tesco Clubcard was that it allowed the company to track how many online shoppers were also frequent Tesco (physical) store shoppers, and this would in turn help the company gather useful data to analyze performance metrics to compare and contrast the two distribution channels.
